Benefits of CBD
Short for Cannabidiol, CBD is one of the 120+ chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant.
Mostly derived from hemp, CBD is not psychoactive. This means that the compound won’t impact or impair the normal functioning of your brain.
Unlike THC, the other common compound occurring naturally in the marijuana plant, CBD is legal in most states and countries across the globe.
The use of cannabis for pain and other health complications dates many years back. However, only up to recent years have scientists been able to point out the specific compounds responsible for the pain-relieving properties in the cannabis plant. CBD comes top in the list.
The compound has gained momentum in the health and wellness world with many studies showing that it can help treat many health complications including depression, anxiety, chronic pain, muscle spasms and even cancer treatment symptoms such as nausea, loss of appetite and vomiting.
Some of these benefits have been explained below:
- Chronic Pain
This is probably the main reason why CBD has become so popular.
The human body is made of a specialized system known as the ECS. ECS, short for endocannabinoid system, is responsible for regulating major body processes such as appetite, sleep, immune response, and pain.
Research shows that CBD may treat chronic pain by attaching itself to receptors in the ECS, impacting neurotransmitters and reducing inflammation.
- Depression and Anxiety
According to WHO, at least 300 million people live with depression. What is even worse, at least 700,000 people commit suicide every year.
Some people still use over the counter or pharmaceutical drugs to treat anxiety and depression. However, it is worthwhile noting that apart from yielding zero results, some of these drugs may lead to negative side effects such as sexual dysfunction, insomnia, and mood swings. Some of these drugs are also addictive.
People are, therefore, looking for a natural approach to deal with this condition. This is where Cannabidiol comes in.
According to studies, CBD interacts positively with serotonin receptors in the human brain bringing about a calming effect.
Serotonin receptors regulate several vital body functions, including feelings of happiness and well-being and someone’s emotional state. CBD helps keep serotonin levels balanced, which is a crucial therapy step for depression patients.
- CBD For Cancer Symptoms
Given the scanty evidence available, we can’t confidently state that Cannabidiol can treat cancer. However, preliminaries findings show that CBD may help manage symptoms related to cancer and its treatment.
We explain below;
- Pain Relief
Most cancer patients often experience severe pain either due to the disease itself or due to its treatment, e.g., during chemotherapy.
In severe cases of cancer, nerves may be injured, the internal organs may be exposed to intense pressure, and one may experience inflammation. As the pain becomes more severe, it may become impossible to control it using the traditional pain-relieving techniques such as the use of opioids.
Cannabidiol reduces inflammation by acting on CB2 receptors. THC also impacts on CB1 receptors helping treat pain as a result of nerve damage.
- Chemotherapy-Induced Nausea
Nausea and vomiting are some of the most common side effects associated with chemotherapy. It turns out that CBD may help treat this condition as well.
In a study, it was found out that an administration of both CBD and THC helped treat chemo-induced nausea better than the standard or traditional treatments alone.
CBD and other cannabinoids may also help cancer patients by stimulating the appetite.
Other Benefits of CBD
Apart from the above-listed benefits, it is believed that CBD could help the body in many other different ways. Although more research is still needed, CBD is said to contain the following properties:
